A letter to Mr Thackeray

Mr. Bal Thackeray,

Really, are you out of your mind completely? You want him to be hanged publicly at the Gateway of India? Though Kasab deserves to die for what he did, the Gateway of India does not deserve to go down in history as the spot where he was hanged. You want it to be a big spectacle with people cheering and the 24 hr news channels telecasting it live for the world to see? You really think that would deter other terrorists from attacking India? Or do you wish to immortalize Kasab's death so that it can be used as fodder for other terrorists-in-training? You known it favors politicians' electoral interests when the country is under attack from external forces? Are you sure you speak only out of a desire for justice?

Just so you know, we are not barbarians. We are a country of decent people who would be outraged by such displays. We are not terrorists. We do not go about killing people because we are told that they have wronged us. We allow the judiciary to determine guilt and provide justice. A fair trial, as is currently underway, is what you need to send a message to the millions of Indians that the state machinery can protect them. The judicial system is capable of bringing terrorists to trial and punishing them without outraging publicly decency. We do not attack lawyers for serving their country. We stand by them. Maybe you could too.

Kasab is a terrorist. He does not need to die a martyr.

You really think that the trial going on is just?

I don't think so. I want to see 2 things, one how long this case gets dragged (it will surely go on for couple of years)and second what sentence he gets.

Bal thakrey is moving scot-free even as he is guilty of inciting and conducting a mass-murder in Mumbai. Shri Krishna Commission report is biting dust in this democracy of 'decent' people !

Yes, Kasab is a terrorist and he is guilty of killing innocent civilians. But i am amused at the innocence with which India takes its business pie in afghanistan 'reconstruction' pillage...we must not loose sight of how India is actually alienating itself from the Muslim world by taking a slavishly pro-US stand - Palestine, Iran or elsewhere...hence we are becoming target of the ire america evokes in a large part of the world

(yes, that ire is misled by mullahs and jehadists - but the agony that provides fertile ground for these jehadists is real....pillage for oil and other business, pulling down governments for its unscrupulous ends and supporting fundamentalists is american history)

I reiterate that i oppose all kinds of terrorism - Kasab's and also America's and Thackrey's anti-minority and anti-migrant hate-mongering...

all i ws trying to do is to underline the ironic innocense of the liberal middle-class chatterati...we hate US and try to pat ourselves for being procedurally democratic to terrorists...we live in the Manmohan era - market with a human face, 'human'laws replace draconian TADA/POTA only in name !

"Just so you know, we are not barbarians."

Does he think the same? I wonder.

SS has shown no respect or appreciation of any democratic institution any time. They have not wasted a single opportunity to undermine the democratic institutions including judiciary. Such statements, however unfortunate, are not at all surprising. I feel we need to stop wasting our energy in not only responding but even considering them.

'Barbarism' and parliamentary democracy do not necessarily go together always. We happily overlook torching of dalit homes all-over country, rape by army personnel in Shopiyan, massacre of tribals for looting natural resources......

To pretend that we are dealing the terrorism, that we are increasingly outsourcing from the US, in a non-barbaric manner is just to sell a liberal victimhood that doesnt take us anywhere in the real fight on terror...

Sorry i meant parliamentary democracy and end of barbarism do not necessarily always go together..

So true, and I agree.
